Chapter Seven

They entered another deserted town, with more empty streets and abandoned buildings. At least there were a few hours of daylight left, Jackson thought. He drove the car down the main road, looking for a shop with food and supplies. There wasn’t much to choose from, and he felt frustrated and tired. Just so tired. Part of him was definitely apprehensive about going into Smithton Lake. Who was he to think he had the power to stop the skeletons?

Then, he switched off that part of his mind and tried to focus on food and water and medical supplies. He turned a corner and saw a medium-sized drugstore. It would have to do. As quietly as he could, he turned into the store’s parking lot and turned off the engine. “Let’s restock our supplies here,” he suggested. Although, even after their conversations about opening up, he still felt almost like he was talking to himself. Rarely did he get any kind of lengthy response. Most of them would be only one or two syllables.

He opened his door and got out, waiting for Nadine, who followed meekly behind him as if she were still afraid he would abandon her. But she followed and picked up her speed as they approached the front door to the shop. Carefully, he opened it, and they entered the dark interior. Jackson held out his flashlight and cast the beam around, looking for any kind of unwelcome surprises that they might encounter. Thankfully, there was nothing. He advanced into the first aisle, picking up a wheeled cart on the way so that he could load it up. Nadine took one, and carrying the other small flashlight, she split from him to cover more ground.

Jackson headed for the back of the store where the food was more likely to be, and he took his arm to slide the available canned goods into his cart. Then, he wiped out the section with the chips in it. He saw a large case of bottled water and loaded it into the bottom of the cart before hurrying across to the shelf with the individually wrapped baked goods.

Nadine stayed at the front, and Jackson could hear her selecting items from the impulse shelves near the registers. She picked up more lip balm, some lighters, and some batteries for the flashlights. Then she took her cart to the first aid section. Although they might not need anything of that sort, she still grabbed bandages, braces, alcohol, sports tape, and anything else that might help with an injury. Of course, they also couldn’t afford for either of them to become ill either, so she picked up some painkillers and cold medicine in as large quantities as she could manage, not sure when they would get a chance like this again. Then, as a noise rang out toward the rear of the store, a sound like metal screeching against the linoleum tile, she bolted for the car.

Jackson had his cart between himself and the skeleton, and he was trying to head for the door, but he was afraid to turn his back on the thing.
